Section 8: Taipei Zoo MRT Station to Guandu MRT Station by bicycle along the Taipei Riverside Bike Path (38km)
There’s one section of the Taipei Grand Trail that is completed by bike, which runs entirely along the Taipei Riverside Bike Path. We cycled a lot of this path during our Taiwan trip last year with bikes from Mathew Bike Shop (who are awesome, btw) but this time we decided to try YouBikes, which have rental outlets all over Taipei. The great thing about YouBike is you can track how many bikes are currently available for rent at each location via the app.

Our original plan was to start at Taipei Zoo MRT station, but the app didn’t show many bikes available (and there are usually a few that are faulty), so we alighted one stop early at Muzha, which meets up with the section 8 course just down the road. It took only a few minutes to pick up the bikes and before we knew it we were on our way down the river path.

Being a weekday, there weren’t too many other cyclists and we quickly ticked off the digital gems we had to collect as part of the course. We were making such good time on the bikes so didn’t take many rest or photo stops.

We somehow missed one of the paddles but caught the second one towards the end of the course. A quick two hours and 38km later we arrived at our finishing point at Guandu MRT station.

Dropping the bikes off was a breeze, you simply just push it back into one of the empty docks. It was such an enjoyable ride we might rent the bikes again while we are still in town. Five courses down, three to go!
