We arrive in Fukuoka nice and early around 7am but far too early to check into our hotel. The plan is to cycle there, drop our bikes off and spend the day exploring.

The accommodation is super nice and has a lovely book cafe so we stop in for a coffee before heading out.

Our first stop is Maizuru Park, which leads us to Ohori Pond, which is more the size of a giant lake.

In the middle of this pond/lake is Ohori Park, which you can get to via the bridge on either side of the park.

It’s a really nice area with loads of walkers and runners. We make our way across the bridge and spot some turtles and fish.

You can also show you’re a real tourist snd rent yourself a giant swan pedal boat.

On the otherside of the bridge we make our way back towards town.

There are several arcades including Taito Station, Round 1 and Gigo so we spend a bit of time in each and pick up a few winnings.

But nothing too big as anything we buy or win we will have to carry with us on the bike for the next two weeks.

We resist the urge to play anything, aside from Cheye who wins himself a few snacks.

For lunch we find this super cute place that sells vegan curry, Chyabuya.

The curry’s pretty awesome so we make a note to come back when we return to Fukuoka at the end of our cycling.

We’re also on the hunt for a phone holder for the bike so we search in a few stores including Daiso and Don Quijoto.

The Daiso is on the 9th floor so view is pretty good, despite having to take 18 escalators to get there (and another 18 to get back down). And not a single phone holder in stock!

We still have a bit of time before check in so we stop by Yukinko, a dessert place selling kakigori (Japanese shaved ice). We decide to order one each as they seem pretty small compared to other places where we would normally share one. we decide on the strawberry and apple pie flavours.

Big mistake. They are HUGE.

We decide to head to Can Do ¥100 shop to make one final attempt searching for a phone holder and have a bit more success! It was actually ¥550 (AUD $5.50) but still a bargain.

We finally make our way back to our accommodation, Lamp Light Books Hotel, for check in.

The room is cosy but a decent size by Japanese standards. They make pretty good use of the space.

We head out later to explore the neighbourhood a bit more. It’s a pretty cool area with loads of character and hip places to eat, drink and shop.

We look forward to exploring a bit more when we return in a few weeks!
