24 – 26 April 2025 | Course 1 – 4 (Haenam)
Previous post <— Day 21 – 27 (Jindo Island)
We’ve discovered ‘through hiking’ isn’t a thing like it is in western countries, explaining why people in Korea generally make a day of hiking then stay in hotels or pensions nearby. I guess more love motels it is then! We develop a process where we book accommodation in advance, then on the day will catch a bus to our next course, then drop our bags off at the motel and catch a local bus to the next course. It’s working pretty well so far, except when some areas don’t take advanced bookings online!
Day 28: Thursday 24 April. Today we made our way to the town of Haenam on the early bus, dropped our bags off at the motel and hiked 13.6km along courses 3 and 4. We passed lots of farmland, sea walls and more barky doggies 🐕 The warmer weather today meant we didn’t need our jackets, although it was still a bit breezy. Haenam is a bigger town than Jindo with lots to see and many mountains to climb ⛰️ We found a few bakeries and went to a basic Korean place for dinner. Our plan is to head to the very first check point tomorrow on course #1 which is at the southern most point of the South Korean mainland!

Day 29: Friday 25 April. After having completed courses 83-97 (although backwards) we finally finished the first 20 courses, having hiked courses 1 & 2 today. Course 2 was your standard trek along farmland and sea walls but once we hit course 1, it was like we had been rolled out a VIP hiking trail and probably one of the best we have hiked of the 34 courses we have done so far. 🌲 It was very nicely built and maintained with wooden walking paths, varied scenery including trails and the beach, clear signage everywhere, and there was even a bridge where visitors can sign a ribbon to show they have passed through 🎗️ We made it to the final check point of the trail at 땅끝탑 / Ttangkkeut-Tab, which is the southern most point of the South Korean mainland. Continued to Ttangkkeut Village for a wander and a cafe stop before catching the rural bus back to Haenam. For dinner we went to a noodle place called 오백국수 / Obaek Guksu (500 Noodles) where we finally got to try 콩국수 / Kongguksu, a cold soy bean based noodle dish normally only sold in the Summer 🍜 So delicious!

Day 30: Saturday 26 April. Haenam to Mokpo. We had intended to catch the bus to Muan today but there was a bit of a hiccup when our hotel booking was cancelled in the early hours, so we decided to stay in Mokpo for the night which is where we needed to transfer buses anyway. There must be some event going on in the area as Muan hotels are completely booked out and even Mokpo accommodation is scarce. (Note: Turns out there are some sports festivals going on in the Joella areas including a fun run and triathlon). We treated today as a recovery day, which also meant we got to go back to all our favourite food places and take a nice walk along the water. Hiking will continue tomorrow, we’ve managed to complete 36 out of 110 courses and 424km so far!
